Ultrasonic Assisted Diamond Tools
Apr. 10, 2025

The ultrasonic-assisted diamond turning tools manufactured by our company are specifically designed for machining hard materials. When installed on an ultrasonic-assisted system, they can directly perform ultra-precision machining on stainless steel without geometric limitations.

Ultrasonic assisted tooling systems, such as the 100 kHz ultrasonic system UTS2 from son-x, enable direct ultra-precision machining of stainless steel with no geometric restrictions. Achieving a surface quality Ra of around 1 nm and a dimensional accuracy PV of 100 nm is feasible. The UTS2 operates at a unique frequency of 100 kHz, combining maximum efficiency with precision.

The main advantages of single-crystal diamond tools combined with an ultrasonic-assisted system include:

Ultrasonic Assisted Diamond Tools

1. Solving the chemical wear issue of diamond: At high temperatures, diamond (carbon) reacts with iron to form iron-carbon compounds (e.g., Fe₃C), leading to rapid diamond wear. The ultrasonic-assisted machining system mitigates this problem by reducing cutting temperatures and shortening contact time.

2. Improving mechanical conditions in the cutting process: Ultrasonic vibration separates chips through high-frequency impacts, reducing plastic deformation resistance during continuous cutting and thereby lowering average cutting forces. Additionally, vibration assistance promotes chip breakage, preventing long chips from wrapping around the tool and enhancing machining stability.

3. Unique effects of ultrasonic vibration: High-frequency impacts induce localized microcracks (brittle fracture) in the material, reducing cutting energy consumption—particularly effective for hard and brittle materials.

4. Enhanced surface quality and tool life: Iron materials tend to adhere to the tool surface, but ultrasonic vibration reduces this adhesion. Moreover, periodic vibration disperses tool wear areas, extending tool life while significantly reducing manufacturing time and costs.

Ultrasonic-assisted systems are widely used in the injection molding or glass molding of automotive lighting lenses, camera lenses, sensor lenses, etc., as well as in precision machinery, optical manufacturing, direct cutting of polycarbonate, and difficult-to-machine plastics. Litian Century's ultrasonic-assisted cutting tools have also been extensively applied in these fields.
